Build a Book Nook!
Earlier this year, as I was scrolling on Instagram I noticed that I would get an ad for a book nook that featured a historical street from the city of Kyoto with cherry blossoms blooming in the background.
After seeing the same ad pop up another 3-5 times, I finally decided check out the price and I was surprised to see the multitude of dioramas featuring anything from a cozy library, a boutique, a cafe, and so much more. This was something I definitely wanted to try out at some point so I made a mental note to purchase one once I decided to make time for it.
A month or two later, my best friend messaged me and asked me if I received my birthday gift from her in the mail. I opened my front door, and found the package waiting for me on my porch. I opened it up to find a book nook kit waiting for me!
And no, I never told her about me wanting to build one…she just knows me too well!
So,
My first book nook!
What is a book nook?
A book nook is basically a diorama that people typically like to place on their bookcase for display. They’re a cozy, cute, and fun DIY craft. As I was writing this post, I learned that there are different levels of difficulty. Pretty obvious I know, but I didn’t consider that there could be such a broad range of possibilities. Levels are typically beginner, intermediate, or hard. I would personally start with an easier kit to ease yourself in.
How much does it cost to purchase one?
They’re pretty affordable. You can purchase one on the lower end for around $25 USD. I’ve seen pricier ones starting at around $50 and the most expensive I saw being $99.
What tools do I need?
I have only made one so far and the instructions gave me a list of items. That included white glue (I only had transparent glue which worked just fine), super glue, scissors, a utility knife, a ruler, a small plastic cup (disposable), a screwdriver (regular size and a tiny one), a nail file, tweezers (this was super helpful for the tiny objects), a stick or toothpick, and a brown marker (I had a purple marker but didn’t end up using it and I don't know what it was for). Tools needed may vary from kit to kit.
How long does it take to make one?
I was planning on making a YouTube video to time myself in making a book nook in less than 3 hours but after starting I realized that 3 hours was QUITE ambitious, especially for my making my first one (and I was filming). I’d say for beginner kits, it’s realistic to expect to take about 3-6 hours. I also didn’t account for drying time. So the book nook that I made took about 5-6 hours total.
Would I do it again?
100%! I would love to make so many more, but I don’t know where I’d display more than 1 of them. I have a small bookcase but it’s filled with other decor pieces. I recently decluttered my personal items since I moved into to my first home with my partner. And during that process, I realized that I would like to be more mindful of things I collect. I don’t consider myself a maximalist and a room filled with many things tend to overwhelm me rather than give me joy. For now, I’ll purchase book nooks as a gift for my crafty, book loving friends!
